The Santa Claus Show

The Santa Claus Show

On Thursday we went to the magical Pumphouse on a bus. We went there to watch the magical show, it was amazing. Kelly wanted lots and lots of presents. Holly just wanted a white balloon for the girl who did not get a balloon. My favourite part was when the balloons all fell down.

The Christmas Show

Yesterday room 2 went on a trip. We went to the Pumphouse Theatre. The show was made by Tim Bray. We went there by bus. It was like 100 degrees in the bus. The show we were watching was the Santa Claus show and it was hilarious. My favourite part was when the elf picked up the papers but the papers kept falling out of his arms.

The Santa Claus Show

On Thursday after morning tea we tucked in our shirts and we lined up outside for the bus. We were waiting to go to the Pumphouse! When we got to the Pumphouse we sat down on the chairs. At the start Elfy checked the list. The first rule was no electronics when the movie is on. Rule two is always sit down or you will get lost. Only stand up if your mum or teacher says you can stand up. My third favourite part was when Santa showed Kelly Santa's toy work shop.

Mitre 10 ad, remade by room 2

Room 2 had a lot of fun planning, preparing and shooting our movie. The first step was picking which ad we were going to remake. We did a vote and Mitre 10 won by 1 vote. After we decided on the Mitre 10 ad we watched it over and over again so that we were able to rewrite it. You might have noticed we have changed a few things... for the better we think.

From everybody in room 2, we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Lost Shoes

Room 2 love poems. Every week we do a different poem. After losing a lot of shoes at school over the past week we decided a poem about losing shoes was a good idea. First Miss Pryde read us the poem. She sometimes reads it in a silly voice which we think is funny. Then Miss Pryde picks one child from each reading group to read the poem to the class. We get to pretend to be the teacher. After we have listened to the readers read the poem we make actions to the poem. We love making actions to the poems. This one was really funny. We took off our shoes and hid them for real. We pretended to look in the house, the car, the cupboards, and the shelves. We didn't find them there. We found them walking by themselves. Look at the videos below of us doing the actions to our poems. Hine-Sky and Sahara did a really good job of reading the poem. They were both very nervous.

Collaborative Learning

We made this tower out of blocks. The paper is to show you this is a boat and the lower one is the money sign. We hid money under the blocks so we could deliver it to an island.
Dito's favourite part about building the tower was hiding the money in the blocks.
Sahara's favourite part was when we all worked together to make the tower.
Lucas loved trying to make the tower tall.

Fake Animals

This afternoon we created fake animals with Mrs Collins. We collaborated by taking turns drawing on other people's pictures to make funny and fake creatures. At the end, we created a name for our creature by mixing the animal names up.

Next Tuesday we will do the next step. Check back in to see what we get up to.

Morning maths board

Every morning we do our maths board. There are four parts to the maths board. In part one the teacher tells us the number of the day and we have to say the number before, the number after, double it and half it. Sometimes you can't half the number because it's odd. That's another thing we have to do, say if it is odd or even. We then put up the number in words. Part two is the shape of the day, we talk about the vertices and edges of the shape. Then we do the equation of the day and let's estimate. Do you know what estimate means? It means to take a guess but not a silly guess, a proper guess. It's okay if you get it wrong, you don't always estimate correctly. In the third part we do fractions, we have learnt a lot about fractions. We count money, both notes and coins. We are getting better at that too. We also do dot patterns. We like dot patterns. Miss Pryde holds up a dot pattern for only 1 second and we have to say how many dots there are. Then we have figure out how many dots we have to add or takeaway to get to 5 or how many we have to add to get to 10. The last part is our favourite, it's called What's the time Mr. Wolf. Miss Pryde says that every time then she tells us a time. We have to put up the digital and analogue version of it. We started off doing 1 o clock, 2 o clock, 3 o clock etc but now we do 1:30, 2:30, 3:30. We have to think hard but we love doing the morning maths board.

Fun at Flying Fives

Every Wednesday we go to Flying Fives. We love flying fives because we get to play with lots of cool things. We play in the kitchen, we build with lego or on the construction table, we play dress up, make puppet shows, create works of arts and sometimes we do activities. Today we were platting wool for our bags. It was hard for our little fingers but we had fun doing it anyway. Keep an eye on our blog to see what our bags look like when we have finished them.

Teamwork Towers

Every Tuesday Mrs Collins teaches us something special. This term we have been learning about smart relationships. We have talked about smart relationships with our parents, teachers, friends and even smart relationships with people online. On Tuesday we put our smart relationships to the test and we worked together to build a tower out of dried pasta and marshmallows. The tower had to stand by itself for three seconds and the group with the tallest tower won. We all tried very hard but there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Dito and Yavi for their freestanding tower that stood at a whopping 31cm tall.

Code cracking spies.

Yesterday we made our own spy photos with Mrs Collins. You had to take a picture of things starting with letters that spelt out a word, like 'and'. For 'A' Malosi took a photo of an apple then for 'N' he took a photo of a nose and for 'D' he took a picture of the door. Then he gave his iPad to other people so they could crack his code and they did.
Yavi spelt out the word 'because', she took a photo of a butterfly to represent 'B', elephant for 'E', Cattaleya for 'C', apple for 'A', an umbrella for 'U', Sahara for 'S' and another elephant for 'E' then she gave it to Mrs Collins to see if she could crack the code and Yavi said, "she did".

Mid Winter Christmas

On Tuesday Mrs Collins let us watch Peppa Pig. It was all about Christmas but it isn't Christmas, it is mid-winter Christmas. It means we are half way to Christmas so we made mid-winter Christmas cards. When we finished making out cards on paper we did it on our iPads. We tried really hard.

Whole school drumming

Yesterday room 2, along with the rest of the school went to the hall to learn to play the drums. We learnt lots of different drum beats and absolutely loved learning the drums but our poor little hands were quite sore afterwards.

Today we had the drum beats stuck in our head but our hands are much better.

Hiwi the Kiwi

Yesterday we went to Hiwi the Kiwi. At Hiwi the Kiwi we danced and learnt about Fishing for the future.
Here are some of the rules room 2 learnt from the Minstrel.
  1. You can't take the big Mummy or Daddy fish home, because they are breeders.
  2. Don't leave plastic lying around because birds think its food.
  3. Always wear your life jackets, even Dads and Mums need to wear life jackets.
  4. Always use a wet towel when picking up fish. If you don't use a wet towel you might rub their scales off and if you have to put them back they might die.
  5. We need to put the little fish back so they get bigger.
  6. Always take your fishing ruler with you when you're fishing so you can make sure the fish are big enough to eat.
Room 2's favourite part of the show was when the Minstrel said "Come up boo boo" in a girls voice. We all thought he was very funny.

Learning and Eating

Room 2 has been discussing halves and quarters. Today we put our theory to practical use. Each student made a pizza and got to choose whether they ate it in halves or quarters. We had leftovers so of course, we opted to share with teachers and support staff around the school.  Room 2 loved creating and especially loved eating their very own pizza's.

Room 2 makes slime

This Friday scientific Pryde came to room 2 to make monster slime. We used borax, water, glue, baking soda, food colouring and liquid detergent. We had so much fun playing with slime, if you look at room 2's student blogs, you'll see the writing that came out if it. Awesome and fun learning.

Scientific Friday - CREATE a robot, spaceship or alien.

Every Friday Room 2 participates in Scientific Friday. Last Friday we used recycled materials to build and create either a robot, spaceship/rocket ship or an alien. Each student got complete autonomy over their creation, using both recycled objects from home and around the school. Plenty of learning took place. We learnt just how hard it can be to cut or glue certain objects, to share materials or take turns on the hot glue gun. Wonderful pieces of writing followed. Wonder what we will do next Friday.

Stardrome trip

Room 1, 2 and 6 went to Stardome last Tuesday to learn more about our Inquiry topic, space. Kaleb learnt by watching a movie at Stardome not to take a dog on a field trip because they might end up in space. Milad learnt not to go behind the rock on the moon because you'll freeze. Room 2's favourite part of the trip was the bus ride. Everybody had plenty of fun and learnt lots of new things.

Kindness and Oat the Goat

Today in Room 2 we were learning about being kind.

Mrs Collins showed us a movie about Oat the Goat and how he chose to be kind.

We came up with lots of ways we could be kind to our friends, our teacher and our families.

We learnt that if you smile at someone they smile back at you - we were sharing our kindness...

Room 2 Smart Learners

This year we are learning to be

Smart Learners

in

Cyber-Smart

Every Monday Mrs Collins from Manaiakalani comes and helps us with our learning on our iPads.  We  have learnt how to Hug-Hold, or have two hands on our iPads, when we are moving around and that the cover must be shut.  Our iPads do not need food or drink...and when we are working on them, the iPads must NOT be near the edge of a table in case they fall off and get hurt.  When we leave the classroom, or we are finished with the iPads, they go back in our special cabinet "Ninjago" to charge or if we are coming back to use them they are stacked 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) high.
